Abu Dhabi has been named the Arab Environment Capital for 2023 by the Secretariat General of the Arab League and the Council of Arab Environment Ministers. This prestigious recognition applauds the emirate’s steadfast commitment to environmental protection and climate action, led by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), expressed immense pride at Abu Dhabi’s designation.

Abu Dhabi designated Arab environment capital for 2023

He attributed the achievement to the visionary leadership and directives of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Sheikh Hamdan underscored Abu Dhabi’s role as a pioneer in sustainability, aligned with the UAE’s vision for a sustainable future. Notably, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared 2024 as another Year of Sustainability, reaffirming the emirate’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

The award underscores the collaborative efforts of governmental and private entities in Abu Dhabi toward environmental protection and resource preservation. Inspired by the forward-thinking vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, these efforts have propelled Abu Dhabi to the forefront of environmental leadership.

Abu Dhabi’s recognition as the Arab Environment Capital for 2023 follows a rigorous evaluation of its environmental protection endeavors. These include initiatives aimed at enhancing quality of life and promoting sustainable development in the region. The emirate secured the title during the 34th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment, held in Muscat.

This achievement coincided with significant local and global events, such as the UAE’s declaration of 2023 as the Year of Sustainability and its hosting of COP28. Collaborating with local partners like the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) and Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company Tadweer, Abu Dhabi showcased its achievements in green infrastructure development, air and water quality improvement, and adoption of renewable energy technologies.

Key achievements include initiatives focused on climate change mitigation, such as the establishment of natural carbon sinks, extensive mangrove planting, and the promotion of low-emission transportation alternatives. Abu Dhabi’s commitment to combating land degradation, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring sound waste management practices further solidifies its position as a global environmental leader.

Aligned with the UAE’s National Innovation Strategy, Abu Dhabi continues to leverage scientific research and innovation to address environmental challenges, garnering international recognition for its pioneering initiatives. Through comprehensive environmental awareness programs, Abu Dhabi has succeeded in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among its populace, earning accolades from global organizations for its impactful initiatives.

Abu Dhabi’s designation as the Arab Environment Capital for 2023 stands as a testament to its unwavering dedication to environmental preservation and sustainable development, serving as a beacon of inspiration not only for the region but also for global communities striving to address pressing environmental challenges. This prestigious recognition underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to fostering a harmonious relationship between human activities and the natural environment.

As the world grapples with escalating climate change impacts and environmental degradation, Abu Dhabi’s proactive approach in tackling these issues sets a commendable example for other nations to follow. By prioritizing sustainability in its policies and initiatives, Abu Dhabi demonstrates that economic growth and environmental stewardship are not mutually exclusive but rather interdependent pillars of a thriving society.
